Curbed Cup Round 1: Venice (3) vs. Financial District (14)

New, 10 comments

Here it is: the 2013 Curbed Cup race for the Los Angeles Neighborhood of the Year. Round one of our tournament features 16 'hoods vying for the coveted golden jpeg--we'll have two matchups every day through Thursday, then take a look at our tournament bracket on Friday. Voting for each poll ends 24 hours after opening (and will be watched closely for any shenanigans). Let the neighborhood on neighborhood carnage begin!

This was the year that Venice went past cool to way too cool for it's own good and right back around to kinda uncool. Good thing the techies didn't notice! Silicon Beach continued to be a real thing that is happening (e.g. Snapchat), rents and home prices continued to skyrocket, and gentrification got so real that someone ended up proposing a boutique hotel. The restaurant and retail scene on Abbot Kinney was hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot, but Rose has also really started to bloom. Also there was a zipline.

The Financial District doesn't seem to change very often, but it had a big 2013: Work started on the new Wilshire Grand, which will be the West Coast's tallest tower, it was announced that the terrible fortress Macy's would be made over into the much friendlier The Block complex, and FIGat7th is filling up with Zara, H&M, a very handsome Sport Chalet, and a huge variety of restaurants.
