Praise Traffic Jesus: West Hollywood Mayor Pro Tem John D'Amico wants to add traffic officers to seven congested intersections during weekday evening rush hour. If the proposal passes, the intersections--Santa Monica Boulevard at Doheny, San Vicente, La Cienega, Crescent Heights and La Brea; and Sunset Boulevard at Doheny and La Cienega--would be monitored every day from 4 to 7 pm. The traffic cops would ensure cars, pedestrians, and bikes don't block traffic, and keep things moving as smoothly as possible. ("Traffic Control Officers are intended to enforce traffic rules rather than overriding the timing of traffic signals.") D'Amico references a 2005 study from the city of Los Angeles that showed that officers at 38 intersections reduced traffic by up to 20 percent. And he also promises that traffic in general is getting worse, thanks to the many new developments on tap in the city--one million square feet of new commercial and residential buildings are breaking ground this year and another million are set to start next year. WeHo's transpo commissioner supports the proposal, which would start off as a six-month trial, and meanwhile the city will work on synchronizing traffic lights too.
