At a ceremony on Friday, the American Planning Association (APA) slathered on strawberry flavored kisses to the year-old Grand Park by naming it a Top 10 Great Public Space of 2013. A small cadre of local officials (sans Mayor Garcetti, who we hear was touring the stupid Port of LA) and APA representatives were on hand to laud the visionaries behind the park, including architects Rios Clementi Hale and LA County Supervisor Gloria Molina, while also recounting the long, hard road to make the park a reality. County CEO Bill Fujioka declared his goal to make the park larger by knocking down the two county buildings -- the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration and the Stanley Mosk Courthouse -- on either side of the park. To commemorate the Grand Park award and as an effort to fund ongoing programming at the park, Sprinkles Cupcakes has created a special strawberry cupcake now available for purchase at their downtown location. We tried one, and they were pretty cup-cakey, if you're into that. Other locales making the cut for Great Public spaces include Forest Park in St. Louis, Grand Central Terminal in New York, and Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
