Wowza, revenue from the Bicycle Casino makes up about half of the contributions to Bell Gardens's general fund (the city has 16 percent unemployment), and now it's set to prop up the little city even more with a new luxury hotel breaking ground next month. Governor Brown came to town to help celebrate construction (Bicycle Casino is a campaign contributor) and said, highly-specifically, that this will be the "first luxury hotel in the mid-cities region of south Los Angeles County," according to the LA Business Journal (sub. req.). It'll come with 100 rooms in seven stories, 15,000 square feet of event and meeting space, an outdoor pool and deck on the second floor, fitness center, brew pub, and restaurant. Brown called the hotel "a wonderful and elegant investment in Bell Gardens, a special place that many more people will now come to know and appreciate," but if any of that were actually true, a casino probably wouldn't be the city's main source of revenue. The hotel should be finished in 2015.
