Designed by Rudolph Schindler in 1935, the DeKeyser Duplex last popped up on our radar back in April when it was flipped back to market a mere four months after being sold for $907,000. According to Redfin, the property changed hands once again on August 2; final sale price: $821,000. And according to Craigslist, the architecturally significant duplex's upper level is now available for rent. The 1,300-square-foot unit features two bedrooms (one with a balcony deck), one bath with separate tub and shower, a living room with gas fireplace and built-in sofa, a full dining room, lots of windows, wood-paneled walls, and a patio with sweeping views of the Hollywood Hills. The catch, of course, is that, due to its unique hillside location—just below Frank Lloyd Wright's Freeman House—the DeKeyser has no garage, no driveway, and no street parking. And, as former resident/owner Margaret Crawford noted in her excellent 2001 LA Times essay about it, "the house is accessible only by climbing 80 stairs from the street below, or descending a steep, precarious path from behind the Freeman house above." However, Crawford also explains that, despite the DeKeyser's quirks and drawbacks, she and her husband happily resided there for 17 years. So while this unit, which is asking $2,500 per month, is obviously not for everyone, or even most people, odds are it's totally perfect for somebody.
