Cruisin' Hollywood in the '50s, Huell Howser Memorial at Griffith

New, 27 comments

HOLLYWOOD: The WOW Report blog dug up this mid-'50s video of Hollywood Boulevard, with a little trek down Vine for good measure. The WOW Report is run by the folks behind the World of Wonder production company (RuPaul's Drag Race, Million Dollar Listing, etc.), and their current headquarters, the old-timey office building at Cherokee they helped restore, is on this old driving tour. A lot fewer tourists, much more smog, and no subway back then, but Tinseltown appeared to be a charming little enclave (look for the Musso & Frank drive-by). [Curbed Staff]

HOLLYWOOD: If you've been looking for a group of like-minded people to share your "That's amaaaaazing" impressions with, there'll be a public sunset ceremony at Griffith Observatory next Tuesday for legendary PBS host Huell Howser, who died this week. Councilmember Tom LaBonge is hosting and says in a press release "Huell had a tremendous enthusiasm for California landmarks like the Griffith Observatory ... And now we must say goodbye to our own California landmark, Huell Howser." (Howser was a resident of LaBonge's district; he lived on Rossmore in Hancock Park.) Remarks start at 4 pm on the Observatory steps. [Curbed Inbox]
