Watch Bergamot Station Gallery Be Demolished for Expo Line

New, 20 comments

Construction is racing along for the Expo Line light rail extension to Santa Monica and there's a lot of progress to see near the Olympic/26th Street station at Bergamot Station (see attached image). The Track 16 gallery just met its maker to make way for the stop and the Santa Monica Museum of Art has video of the destructoporn, via Patch. While the museum's executive director says she's happy for the return of train service to the area--the first since the '50s--the museum's description of the gallery demo doesn't quite match that sentiment: "There is now a hulking new [rail] overpass on Cloverfield and Olympic Blvds. and today (January 22, 2013) we witnessed the demolition of Track 16--a bittersweet goodbye to this local icon. We watched with awe as the giant claw of the excavator ferociously devoured the building." Track 16 has since relocated to Culver City; other galleries around the Bergamot Station area are also relocating--the 'hood is set to get a lot of new development, including a new arts district.
