The LA Times has the story of Charles Ray Walker, a homeless man originally from Texas who spent nearly two decades transforming (and eventually opening to the public) a weedy plot of land by the LA River in Boyle Heights: "He grew fruits and vegetables on bare slopes. He took discarded toys and whimsical signs and decorated terraces and elaborate stairwells he carved out of the dirt." "Bamboo Charlie" was found dead in his home by an underpass last week and friends are hoping to preserve his folk arty work. [LAT, image via]
