Westwood Getting a Sprouts, New Night Market in Boyle Heights

Updated 11:32 am: WETSWOOD: A reader asks "what is going on at the corner of Westwood Blvd and Massachusetts Avenue at the old 'Ross Dress for Less'. It's been over a year since Ross moved up the street and the building has remained vacant without any "for lease" signage or notices. A gate went up around the property last week but still no signage or signs of things to come." A gander at the Department of Building and Safety's permitting website indicates that the space will become a Sprouts market. Congrats, Westwood! Update: A neighbor tells us that Sprouts hasn't actually signed the lease for the space yet and that in fact neighbors have big concerns about the market's plans for loading. The Westwood Homeowners Association was set to discuss the matter last night. [Curbed Inbox/LADBS]

BOYLE HEIGHTS: This past weekend, the East LA Community Corporation and City Councilmember Jose Huizar launched El Mercado del Pueblo, "a one-stop evening farmers' market with crafts, produce, hot food, and live music" in Boyle Heights (at Sixth and Mathews Streets). The event is a sort of replacement for the Breed Mercado, which the LAPD shut down in 2010. According to a press release, "Since the shutdown, vendors have been left struggling to find a safe place to sell ... El Mercado del Pueblo is now a new economic development tool used to help local street vendors and increase access to fresh produce." [Curbed Inbox]
