Another coastal city that is already a popular place to ride bikes is stepping up its game this week. Last night, the Newport Beach City Council approved several initiatives that will ramp up construction of bicycle safety projects, reports the Corona Del Mar Cyclist blog. First the council took a long-juggled sharrows project for the Pacific Coast Highway through Coronal Del Mar off the shelf, scheduling installation for October. Then the council made the surprise announcement of a Bicycle Safety Improvement Fund--the council promised 3:1 matching (the city will invest three dollars for every one dollar invested by the citizenry) up to $450,000. The council's moves came in response to an accident that killed two cyclists earlier this month. [cdmCyclist]
