Liveblogging the Space Shuttle Endeavour Landing at LAX

New, 35 comments

The space shuttle Endeavour arrives at LAX today (watch for flyovers all over Southern California starting around 11:30 am)--it's on its way to the California Science Center in Exposition Park where it will live out the rest of its life as a museum exhibit. We're hanging out all morning at the Flight Path Museum on the south side of LAX, where the media has gathered to document every last possible piece of Endeavour information, and we are liveblogging this thing. Please join us:

9:20 am: Parking is set to close at 9:30 and word is that 300 media people were given credentials, so we're pretty surprised at how non-clusterfucky the scene is here at the Flight Path Museum. There are a handful of people milling about the building and a small group of people out on the tarmac setting up equipment. Current word is that the space shuttle will arrive close to 1 pm. Incidentally, Peter, Paul and Mary's cover of "Leaving on a Jet Plane" is playing on the PA right now. Cute, guys.

10:30 am: Here's a map of the airport showing the big points of interest: Endeavour's touchdown spot, media location at the Flight Path, and the United Hangar where Endeavour will stay until it leaves for the Science Center.

10:38 am: SoundtrackWatch: "Come Fly With Me," "Rocket Man," "Danger Zone" (aka the theme from Top Gun), "Aeroplane" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, "Up, Up and Away" by The 5th Dimension. We were pretty charmed until we realized it's on a loop. This could get old. In other news, there was some kind of kerfuffle over someone going past some orange cones on the tarmac. Seems to have died down.

11:18 am: Flight simulator!

11:24 am: The airport's going to get a flyby in about seven minutes. Watch out, Westside!

11:55 am: Endeavour just flew by the north side of LAX. Hope to have a better photo soon. If you have photos or tips from elsewhere around the city, send 'em in to the tipline please!

12:03 pm: And it's back again, loooooow. Meanwhile our whole Twitter feed is #Endeavour--sounds like it's flown over City Hall, the Griffith, and the Santa Monica Pier, still headed for JPL and down to Disneyland. Word is that it's flying S-curves.

12:26 pm: Hear it's over Long Beach right now. Estimated to have a southside LAX flyby at 12:50 pm and land at 1 pm.

12:30 pm: Nope, now they're saying about 12:45 pm. Also a fire department guy told us that there are reports of people crossing the freeways on foot. What the hell! Just look up, crazies.

12:39 pm: There goes the southside LAX flyby. Landing imminent.

12:42 pm: Overheard on the radio: "The space shuttle Endeavour's gonna be landing here." Hope they knew that already.

12:43 pm: The passengers on the Southwest flight forced to circle the airport must at least have some dope views to make up for the delay.

12:46 pm: It's 14 miles out to the east right now, so it should land in about five minutes.

12:52 pm: And it's landed.
