WC Fields/Lily Tomlin Laughlin Park Estate Back With Big Chop

New, 4 comments

Although this sprawling Mediterranean in Los Feliz's gated Laughlin Park is referred to in its listing as "the WC Fields Estate," the bulbous-nosed entertainer never actually owned the place, he merely rented it. So if you're a stickler for that sort of thing, you may prefer to call it "the Lily Tomlin Estate," in honor of the oversize-chair-frequenting comedienne who purchased the house in the early eighties and famously painted it pink inside and out. (You'd think there'd be a few photos of the property from that time period floating around online, wouldn't you? Alas, such is not the case.) Built circa 1920 for an oil baron by architect William M. Clarke, the 6,865 square foot residence features four bedrooms, four baths, scalloped ceilings, original woodwork, a copper solarium, five fireplaces, a wine cellar, and swimming pool (hopefully heated--the listing doesn't specify--as it seems to be well-shaded). Currently, the house is owned by film exec Dennis Rice, who paid $4.4 million for it in 2004, then unsuccessfully tried to unload it for a whopping $11 million in 2009. Three years later, the .63 acre property has returned to market with the (relatively) humble asking price of $7.149 million.
