El Segundo Golfers Don't Want Drunken Bowling-Golf Course

New, 5 comments

A proposal was made this week to change out The Lakes municipal golf course in El Segundo for a TopGolf, "which is a combination entertainment venue and game-like driving range that employs targets and microchipped balls," reports the Daily Breeze (The Lakes doesn't make enough money). TG's driving range experience is sort of like bowling, as they explain it: "The golf balls are equipped with computer chips inside, which allows golfers to measure the length and accuracy of their shots as they aim to hit targets on the range." TG also wants to rearrange the current setup at the 20 year old course and put in "three stories of covered bays," a full-service restaurant, bars, meeting areas, and a new pro shop. The existing first hole would be wiped out for 200 more parking spaces. But, as you can imagine, actual golfers are pissed--the big complaint has been that the bar "would take away from the facility's family atmosphere." Meanwhile, the city council seems pretty excited about the probably moneymaker.
