KCRW has picked a design for its new roving sound booth and it kind of looks like if you get too close, it could suddenly sprout a forest of weapons and tear you to shreds, but actually it's just an innocent silver orb where the radio station will record stories for Sonic Trace, its new series about the immigrant experience in Los Angeles. A couple months ago, KCRW put out a call for designs for a mobile sound booth they could use for field recordings--this winning entry, called La Burbuja ("the bubble"), was designed by the firm Mat-ter. According to the Architect's Newspaper blog, La Burbuja is made up of six "slices" of low-density foam; it'll be skinned in either sheet metal or fiberglass covered in reflective chrome paint. The budget for the project is $5,000 and Mat-ter is set to finish up the booth in the next month. KCRW has all the entries here.
