Historic South-Central's famous old Dunbar Hotel, which was built in 1928 by "USC's first African American graduate, to serve African Americans seeking accommodations on their visits to Los Angeles," has been undergoing a big renovation to turn it into senior housing: "Perhaps the most dramatic change will be to the capacious light well in the middle of the building ... [architect Dan] Withee's solution was to remove the courtyard ceiling and erect a new glass ceiling on the roof, which will create a five-story atrium." [LAT]
