It's home tour season and this past weekend we were back on the Westside for the AIA/LA's Venice Vista tour. We visited three of the five houses on display (we toured Ortiz Mexia Projects's Appleton Way house a few weeks back and one house did not allow photos)--now let's get to it!
Photos by Elizabeth Daniels You've got to get up pretty early in the morning (and use that time to design a lovely house) to get on Dwell's list of favorite houses--Escher GuneWardena Architecture's Pearson-Trent Residence in Mar Vista landed in the magazine's "Best Homes in America" issue last year. The house is a remodel of a Mar Vista bungalow--it "engulfs the L shape plan of the original building with a new shell to form a large rectangular mass," according to the architects' website. Like in yesterday's Sheller-Borunda Residence, a glass wall slides back to open the Pearson-Trent's open plan public spaces to the outdoors. The concrete block wall out front was handcrafted by local artist Evan Holloway and "references a late work of Gerrit Rietveld."
