RetailWatch: Del Amo Mall Reno Plan Underwhelms

New, 17 comments

When the Indianapolis-based owners of the Del Amo mall recently presented their plans for a renovation of the aging behemoth--the largest mall in the County--it went over like a lead balloon with Torrance officials, according to the Los Angeles Business Journal (sub. req.). Two years ago, Simon Property Group said they'd spend $200 million to fix up the rundown mall, which features an odd mix of upscale and downmarket stores. But Simon executives told the Council in February that initially they only plan to install skylights, fix up the facade, and move the food court, and didn't mention a timeline, new tenants, or that $200 million. More should be known next month, but many believe Simon is reluctant to spend money on an enclosed mall, a concept currently out of vogue. [LABJ]
