Last week, the LA City Council heard a motion [link to PDF] from Councilman Eric Garcetti to study reviving LA's pedicab (bicycle rickshaws) program. The motion noted that both the Hollywood Chamber and Hollywood Business Improvement District have "expressed support for a pedicab program." The motion directed LADOT to study the feasibility of a pedicab pilot program in Hollywood. So what happened to all the pedicabs that used to roam LA? Josef-Bray Ali blogs an excellent history on the Flying Pigeon LA blog. Essentially after years of bureaucratic interference it really became unfeasible in 2009 thanks to an LADOT rule requiring "mandatory helmet use for passengers on pedicabs; dress slacks, dress shirts, and dress shoes for pedicab operators..."
