Santa Monica College Expanding Its Glassy Broad Stage

New, 10 comments

Santa Monica College is building onto its Eli and Edythe Broad Stage at the SMC Performing Arts Center at Arizona and Eleventh--they've submitted plans to the state for a two-story (with mezzanine) extension of the building. The Broad "is looking to expand its programming" right now and will be collaborating with the LA Opera to bring smaller-than-usual productions to the building starting next year. The new structure, designed by DLR Group WWCOT, will be more than 19,000 square feet and include a 165 seat music hall with a movable wall to make it "semi-outdoor," as well as a rehearsal room and storage, reports the LA Times. The wing will replace part of the center's Madison Building (which will be partly demolished) and some rehearsals and classes now being held in the Broad's existing spaces will also be moved into the new space. The new wing is expected to cost $12.3 million and will be financed via a 2008 public bond; however, it will also "eventually be renamed after a donor." Work is expected to start sometime this year and be finished as early as 2014. SMC is also looking to add parking at the Performing Arts Center and has just acquired another building at the site that it plans to use for offices.
