Unsurprisingly, torches and pitchforks came out after it was announced that Walmart is opening a 33,000 square foot grocery store in Chinatown. But even though groups like the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy decried the giant retailer moving downtown, the Los Angeles Business Journal reports that others are over the moon about the store. The Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, the Asian Business Association, and members of the Los Angeles Chinatown Business Council and the Chinese Chamber of Commerce have expressed support. Nicki Ung of the Chinese chamber told LABJ that "A lot of our history is here, but we need to move toward modernizing with society." [LABJ, sub. req.]
