If you've never had occasion to visit one (for one reason or another), you might not know that the county has 17 probation camps that house and rehabilitate about 1,300 young people at a time. The 50 year old Camp Vernon J. Kilpatrick in Malibu is badly in need of work (its gym has been yellow-tagged since the Northridge earthquake, for instance) and the County Supes have just voted to approve a huge makeover--with the help of a state grant, the camp will be demolished and replaced with "a state-of-the-art rehabilitative compound."
