Palihotel Melrose officially opens today on Melrose Ave., just west of Fairfax, an area that can really use a nice and easy little boutique hotel. The building was built in the late 1960s as senior housing and most recently served as the mod-ish Orbit Hotel and Hostel; Palihouse developers Paligroup (and specifically founder/design Avi Brosh) have converted it into something more like an old English boarding house you might stumble upon late one night after a day of hiking the moors (in fact, press literature describes it as a "European neighborhood inn"). The 32 rooms are all about 250 square feet and come in either twin or queen. Some have patios and some face out to busy Melrose (but are surprisingly quiet). The hotel also has a six-bed Thai massage spa, a blowout salon opening in March, and the Palikitchen cafe, which will be fully up and running in a few weeks (more on that over at Eater LA). Rates start at $250 a night for both varieties of room.
