WEST HILLS: Recently posted to the Curbed LA flickr pool: this 1982 hack of the Valley Circle sign in West Hills (that was the year that Frank and Moon Unit Zappa's "Valley Girl" unleashed the phrase "gag me with a spoon" on the world; the Nicolas Cage vehicle Valley Girl was released the following year). Photographer Karol Franks writes "Someone had climbed the pole and changed the sign 'Valley Cir' for Valley Circle Blvd to 'Valley Girl.' This was before photoshop! I never found out who did it, but it was pretty funny." So perfect, down to the bikers. [Curbed LA flickr pool]

CULVER CITY: Local boy makes good: LA's Next Top Starchitect, Thom Mayne, has won the American Institute of Architects's 2013 AIA Gold Medal. The Architect's Newspaper sums it up: "The list of works from his firm Morphosisis way too long to include here, but it includes the diamond Ranch High School in Pomona, California; the California Department of Transportation District 7 Headquarters in Los Angeles; and 41 Cooper Square in New York City." And of course the firm's own HQ in Culver City. [A/N]
