What's In an LAUSD Name?

New, 9 comments

With the LAUSD wrapping up its decade-long school building frenzy, the LA Times looks at the weird naming process for the campuses. There are now LA schools named for musician Carlos Santana, lawyer Johnnie Cochran, author Maurice Sendak, a Swiss gold rush pioneer, music producer Quincy Jones, Presidents William Taft, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, author Sandra Cisneros, and the parents of City Councilmember Tony Cardenas. The best has to be the school named for environmentalist author Rachel Carson and former vice president/activist Al Gore--the Carson-Gore Academy of Environmental Sciences sits on a formerly toxic site.
