WEST LA: No one's a big fan of the Vons grocery store at Barrington Avenue, with its enormous parking lot hugging Santa Monica Boulevard, torn-up and litter-strewn sidewalks, and quite pungent interior. For years, owner Safeway promised a pedestrian-friendly overhaul, but that has yet to happen--even though the grocer has booted out most of the little shops attached to the supermarket. A former representative for the local neighborhood council's planning and land use committee tells us now that any revamp has been postponed indefinitely. A few rumors persist that Safeway is studying a mixed-use development, but considering they've jerked around the neighborhood for years, don't hold your breath. [Curbed Staff]
LOS FELIZ: Apocalypse Day isn't quite over--Griffith Observatory is expecting lots of visitors tonight and will stay open until 12:01, with extra shows in the planetarium (including Time's Up, which discusses the Mayan calendar and its non-doomsday) and a "NOT-the-end-of-the-world brief presentation" at 11:50. There will probably be a big crowd, so "access roads will close as soon as parking is full or at 10 p.m., whichever comes first," according to City Councilmember Tom LaBonge's newsletter. Furthermore, be careful with your pot (which you are obviously smoking because you live in California): " LAPD and Park Rangers will be out in full force to prevent use of alcohol or illegal drugs."
