Five Years After Fire, Griffith Park Bird Habitat Reopening

Remember the 800-acre Griffith Park fire in May 2007? The devastating blaze left some long-lasting damage, including the indefinite closure of the park's bird sanctuary. But after a lot of work, the habitat, located on Vermont Canyon Road (past the Greek Theatre), reopens during a ceremony on Wednesday morning, according to a release from City Councilmember Tom LaBonge. "The Department of Recreation and Parks has completed a series of repairs to ready it for re-opening, including catch basin restoration, woodcrete fence repair, trail grading, site clean-up, and the removal of a large number of hazardous and downed trees," LaBonge reports. Don't get the Bird Sanctuary Trail confused with the actual sanctuary; the former reopened in 2009.
