We're always surprised when developers live up to their word, so we're a bit gobsmacked that Ava Little Tokyo, a two-building development with 280 apartments and 20,000 square feet of retail, is now on its way. Developer AvalonBay Communities told community leaders in May that work would begin late this year and they weren't kidding, according to a commenter on the SkyscraperPage forum. Both buildings are six stories, with plans for an outdoor plaza for al fresco dining. Thomas P. Cox Architects, behind the next-door Sakura Crossing development, is designing the project. Ava LT will eat up two portions of Little Tokyo's Block 8 parcel, leaving only one sad surface parking lot. But fear not, there are plans for another mixed-user to break ground there in March.
