Last week, the county officially passed its Dark Skies ordinance, making sure things stay dim in rural areas in the Santa Monica Mountains, the northern part of the county, parts of Catalina, and some of the East San Gabriel Valley near Rowland Heights and Diamond Bar. The rules say that outdoor lights have to be shielded and limited to 400 lumens; most commercial and industrial lights can't be on at all between 10 pm and sunrise. The new rules go into effect in January. [Zev Yaroslavsky]
