Last year, off of Santa Barbara Island, researchers found the George E. Billings, a 1903 schooner that was the last and largest built by the Hall Brothers shipbuilding company. Archaeologists and historians had been looking for the ship for 20 years; their biggest clue was a 1941 newspaper article (the owner at the time had scuttled the ship rather than install Coast Guard-mandated bulkheads). A paper on the find was presented yesterday at the California Islands Symposium. [DiscoveryNews, image via]
