After installing solar power at 17 LAUSD schools, a company called SolarCity announced today they're hooking another nine LA-area schools up to the sun by the first half of 2013. The project totals 7.4 megawatts and will save LAUSD more than $775,000 in its first year of operation and more than $25 million over 20 years. Not only is the project a money-saver, it serves as an educational tool with students witnessing demonstrations, taking part in walking tours of the generators, and viewing photovoltaic panels that show off the traveling energy.
