The La Kretz Innovation Campus, a green tech incubator that will house science-focused offices, conference rooms, event space, laboratories, a manufacturing workshop, and classrooms in a renovated 60,000 square foot building on Hewitt Street in the Arts District, moves closer to fruition with a $2.1 million grant from the Commerce Department, the Los Angeles Business Journal reports (sub. req.). The money will pay to equip some of the campus and for a solar energy system that will help provide power. The plan is to open the project next summer. The mayor's hope is that the campus serves as the first big accomplishment for the Cleantech Corridor, an aspiring district of alternative energy and clean transportation companies set up along the river. But simply having La Kretz move forward is a big deal for locals, who spoke two years ago about their desire to have the area cleaned up.
