The next stage in Downtown's gentrification might be held up by the lack of elementary schools in the neighborhood--right now there's only one (Para Los Niños charter) and one more currently closed for renovations (the public Ninth Street Elementary). According to the Downtown News, that recent Downtown demographic survey showed that there are about 1,853 kids under five living Downtown and about 1,534 kids between five and 18, but that "LAUSD officials said there are no plans to open another elementary school in the core of Downtown."
