This is an idea that could go over well in LA or any other place littered with parking lots: Stockbox Grocers, which just made its funding goal on Kickstarter, is taking shipping containers and turning them into makeshift grocery stores in the parking lots of food deserts. The first Stockbox Grocer will be in the West Seattle district of Delridge, where a full-scale supermarket is only reachable by car or long bus ride. An apartment complex in a dense section has agreed to allow the grocery store to set up shop in their parking lot, so now fresh produce and other food will be available without wheels. The hope is that if the Delridge experiment goes well, a permanent Stockbox Grocers will set up shop next year. [Kickstarter]
