LA has had turnstiles in some of its rail stations for two years now, and pretty soon they're going to actually start using them (until now they've been unlocked, meaning anyone can walk through). The +Metro blog says that Metro is looking at testing locked turnstiles at one to four stations (Hollywood/Western, Vermont/Beverly, Wilshire/Normandie, Wilshire/Western) in October, with tentative plans to lock all of the Red and Purple lines in 2012. Eventually only TAP cards will get you through the turnstiles, and Streetsblog is glad that Metro's figured out a way to deal with day passes issued on buses--they'll now come on TAP cards.
