"Western Gray Squirrels (Sciurus griseus) are native to the LA area. The more reddish-colored Eastern Fox Squirrels (Sciurus niger) were introduced to the LA area in 1904 by Civil War veterans at the Old Soldiers' Home at Sawtelle (now the Verteran's Hospital), and have been slowly spreading across the region ever since. Apparently, the veterans thought the Fox Squirrels from back home were tastier than the Western Grays. :-)" --LA MapNerd [A Squirrel Fell in the Tar Pits]
