Demolition started yesterday on the looooooong-blighted Marlton Square (aka Santa Barbara Plaza) in Crenshaw, according to Leimert Park Beat. A press release says that destruction was first proposed by Mayor Tom Bradley back in 1984, but has been held up over and over as the property has become blightier and blightier. The latest trouble was a developer default in 2004 followed by the lender's bankruptcy in 2006. Bankruptcy was a tricky business because of all the different businesses and owners involved, but the property finally emerged from the mess in January. The Community Redevelopment Agency has now bought "nearly all the remaining properties" and plans to turn the 20 acre site into a new shopping center soon. The press release says the CRA "has been approached by numerous interested developers."
