Today in Supermarkets: RIP WeHo Jons, West LA Vons DeathWatch

WEST HOLLYWOOD: We knew it was coming and it's here--the Jons at Fountain and La Brea is no more. A reader sends us this picture and tells us, "Looks like they are getting ready to demo based on what the workers were doing." A big development by Monarch is planned for this space, with 187 apartments and 70,000 about 20,000 square feet of new retail. [Curbed Inbox]

WEST LA: Similarly down-and-out is the Vons at Santa Monica Blvd. and Barrington, or in Westside parlance, the "Ghetto Vons." For years, locals heard the odorous store was coming down to make way for a more pedestrian-friendly (and ostensibly better smelling and better staffed) Pavilions market. Stores surrounding Ghetto Vons have begun to close and Vons employees are saying the wrecking ball is coming in October. Who knows if that's true, since Safeway--owner of Vons and Pavilions--won't get back to us and a grocery strike is possible, if averted for now (although a strike may be the best time to close the store).
