Harassing Bikers Will Cost You

New, 25 comments

Today the City Council unanimously passed an ordinance that increases the financial penalties against drivers found harassing cyclists. According to the verbiage of the new law, via the LADOT's Bike Blog, anyone found in violation of the Bicyclist Anti-Harassment Ordinance--including those who physically assault a cyclist, threaten to do so, intentionally distract a cyclist, or force a bike off the road-- "shall be liable for [three times] the actual damages with regard to each and every such violation, or $1,000, whichever is greater, and shall be liable for reasonable attorneys' fees and costs of litigation. In addition, a jury or a court may award punitive damages where warranted." Meanwhile, the LAPD just released a driver who allegedly killed a bicyclist in a road rage incident. [The Source]
