Today in private space exploration: Hawthorne-based SpaceX breaks ground on a launch pad renovation at Vandenberg Air Force Base (near Lompoc) for its upcoming Falcon Heavy rocket, which will be "large enough to send cargo or even people beyond Earth’s orbit. Only the retired Saturn V rocket that ferried astronauts to the moon was bigger." SpaceX, which was founded by Elon Musk of PayPal and Tesla Motors, expects a maiden launch from Vandenberg in 2013.
