City Thinks NFL Stadium Deal May Be Nigh, Columnist Holds Breath

New, 63 comments

The city's Magic 8-ball seems to say "outlook good" on a stadium deal between L.A. and developer AEG on the latter's July 31 deadline. The week has seen a steady stream of announcements coming out of AEG's quarters, from a slimmer bond requirement on the West Hall reconstruction to the announcement of architect Populous for the hall's new design. Despite some misgivings here and there -- blogdowntown reports one councilman questioned why AEG got to select the architect for a city property -- most seem inclined to see the deal as firming up. The OC Register reports that Jan Perry, chair of the city council's stadium committee, says they'll probably have a memo of understanding ready for AEG by their deadline, with a final deal to be hammered out by May of next year. Meanwhile, LA Times columnist Bill Plaschke says it's all very simple: "Do you like Staples Center? Do you like football? If both answers are yes — and for most people, they are — then you should support the tax-free idea that the folks who built Staples Center are going to build us a new stadium." 'Course, that City of Industry stadium could still muck things up for Farmers Field. -Andy J. Wang
