Hey, the Feds Like the Bergamot Development

New, 11 comments

A few months ago, the Santa Monica City Council asked for a redesign of the proposed Bergamot Transit Village and sent the developers away with their tail between their legs (they described the Hines Group's project as an "insular campus with tall, unvaried buildings with blank walls..."). But last week, US Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan toured the site of the proposed development--currently an industrial area, but one that will get an Expo Line stop--and granted the effort $652,000, reports the Santa Monica Mirror. The money "gives the Bergamot project a preferred sustainability status and therefore makes Santa Monica eligible to receive other federal resources for implementation of plans that connect neighborhoods with public transportation," the paper notes.
