Shrunken But Alive, 1111 Wilshire Breaking Ground in City West

New, 15 comments

Miracle of miracles--the seven-story residential/retail building 1111 Wilshire breaks ground in a City West parking lot on Thursday afternoon. Vancouver, Wash.-based developers Holland Partner Group--behind five built or planned City West projects, including the nearby Glo--originally planned a 30-story tower before the markets crumbled. Even so, 210 apartments, a floor of amenities, and 7,750 square feet of retail will be part of the smaller project, with design by Nadel Architects. Blogdowntown takes a longer look at City West, which they say was dubbed "West Bank" in the 1980s, when it was seen as LA's next high-rise 'hood (didn't come to pass, though it's now quite dense), and currently by some snobs as "Downtown's Jersey".
