Downtown LA Gets Its Own Mini-Powell's

New, 3 comments

(A mini-Powell's is still pretty big...) Brigham Yen reports on the move and expansion of The Last Bookstore in Los Angeles, which on Friday opened its new doors on 5th and Spring in the Historic Core. The former shop at 4th and Main was less than 1,000 square feet, while the new outlet, at the bottom of the Spring Arts Tower, is over 10 times the size (Powell's, the giant Portland bookstore, is about 68,000 square feet). While bookstores are closing everywhere (e.g., the big Borders on Westwood Blvd. is currently being converted to a Ross Dress for Less), owner Josh Spencer is betting all those fashionable newcomers like to read, or at least pretend to. The neighborhood is also home to Metropolis Books, which occupies a Main Street storefront between 4th and 5th. [Brigham Yen]
