City Councilmember Bill Rosendahl introduced a motion yesterday that would take murals out of the same category as billboards: "City planning officials, as well as the Cultural Affairs Department and the Building and Safety Department, have equated signs with murals for nearly a decade in Los Angeles, much to the consternation of painters and muralists," reports the Argonaut. (The momentum for the ordinance came out of Venice, which abhors a blank wall.) Rosendahl's motion would classify murals as art and pilot a program for permitting them.
