"There's a slight element of danger," Josh Spencer tells the LA Times about the new location of his Last Bookstore on the ground level of the Spring Arts Tower at Fifth and Spring Streets. Upgrading from the 1,000 square foot spot on Main Street to the new 10,000 square foot former Citizens Bank space came care of a discounted 3-year lease deal. Inside, painted, vaulted ceiling remain from the circa 1915 bank, as well 25-foot pilars and a sprinkling of tile mosaics on the floor. Outside, suspected drug dealers getting shot by the LAPD keeps the gritty vibe of the gentrifying neighborhood alive. [LA Times]
