The picturesque Cove Stairway in Silver Lake could be renamed in honor of gay activist Harry Hay, who lived nearby when he started one of the first LGBT organizations in the early 1950s (the group that would become the Mattachine Society), reports The Eastsider LA. The neighborhood council will discuss the matter at their meeting tonight and also decide whether to add a $1,000 memorial plaque for the recently-deceased Hay. There appears to be neighborhood support for the changes, so much so that locals have volunteered to help cover the costs of the plaque. [Eastsider LA]
