Against neighbor complaints, Long Beach's planning commission approved the use of a bright orange shipping container in the remodeling of a house on San Francisco Avenue, reports the Long Beach Press-Telegram. The decision paves the way for other shipping containers to be utilized citywide, but all such projects will require an individual site review process that typically costs homeowners several thousand dollars. Back to the San Francisco Ave. house--neighbors argued that the corrugated metal container, which was lowered into a backyard before hearings were scheduled, has a questionable color choice and doesn't fit with the mostly Spanish-style neighborhood. The planning commissioners were split on the matter, voting 4-3 to allow the containers as homes, with one approving commissioner saying, "Blight's in the eye of the beholder."
