Long Beach formally unveils new protected bike lanes on Saturday, where a curb and a row of parked cars separates cycles and vehicular traffic, and bike-exclusive traffic signals direct cyclists--the lanes are the first of their kind west of New York City, according to Streetsblog. In describing the benefits of the separated lanes, Streetsblog throws in this doozy: "Protected bike lanes are for everyone, but do have great appeal to less intrepid cyclists - who can include novices, families and many women." Writer Joe Linton, one of the organizers of CicLAvia, might want to watch out for angry female mobs at the next CicLAvia event. [Streetsblog]
