Bruin Basketball About to Be Homeless, May Play on Trojan Turf

New, 28 comments

Pauley Pavilion has been home to UCLA men's basketball since 1965, but it's taking next year off to have a little work done. With Pauley out of commission, UCLA is trying to figure out where the Bruins will play in the 2011-2012 season and is polling season ticket holders about potential venues. Most of the choices, including the Honda Center in Anaheim, the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, the RaboBank Arena in Bakersfield, the Valley View Center in San Diego, and the Staples Center, can't host a full home season. The Forum could've handled it, but that option died when the Madison Square Garden people came in and decided to renovate. Enter [evil music] the LA Sports Arena. It's the only place available for the entire season and, according to ESPN, officials have said they'll "make cosmetic changes to the arena in order to make it feel more UCLA-friendly." UCLA played at the Exposition Park venue in the early sixties, but the USC basketball team played there from 1959 until 2006, and of course thousands of Trojans still live right next door. Only the UCLA survey will tell if Bruins fans are ok with that. As for the women's basketball team, the volleyball teams, and the gymnastic team, who also play in Pauley, they'll likely move to the gym at the John Wooden Center. [Arena via Wikipedia]
