Shuffleboard is out and petanque is in: Santa Monica recently removed courts for the former sport and installed those for the latter in Palisades Park. Petanque is a French bocce-liked sport and is described as "the fastest growing outdoor bowling game in the world," by PetanqueAmerica.com. The new courts, located between the senior center and the pier, are available between 5 am and midnight. A release from Santa Monica describes the petanque course as a welcome improvement over the shuffleboard courts, which have sat idle for years. [Santa Monica]
